Classes Taught
Student in Pertutor
My name is Sergio, and I’m a private Spanish teacher based in Barcelona. My native languages are Spanish and Catalan, and I have a high level of English. From a very young age, I’ve always enjoyed portraying different characters and exploring various realities. I suppose that’s why I decided to become an actor and delve into different cultures and languages. During my stay in New York 8 years ago, I decided to start teaching Spanish, which has since become my main source of income. When I was a child, my parents sent me abroad to learn English, but I never learned it the way Joe Goscinski, my former voice and speech teacher at Stella Adler, taught me. He was a master of languages, with an incredible level of understanding in many of them. Since I needed to pay for tuition and rent, I decided to start teaching Spanish, applying the same method he had taught me. Joe told me something that stuck with me: “The best language teacher is not a native speaker, but someone who can truly understand the mindset of both languages.” From him, I learned things I’d never been told before. For example, that American English has 14 vowels, compared to the 5 vowels in Spanish. That Ts and Ds are different in both languages because in Spanish, they are non-aspirated dental consonants, while in English, they are aspirated alveolar consonants. These subtle differences make a huge impact. I also learned that English sounds are produced much farther back in the mouth, while Spanish sounds are created much farther forward. Try it—you’ll sound more Spanish! All these insights, and many more I hadn’t known before, have inspired me to share this knowledge with the world. But I don’t just teach pronunciation—I also offer lessons on grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening comprehension, writing, and speaking. Even though I hated Spanish grammar in school, I found my own way of teaching it—how I see it, not how it was taught to me. I guess when you love what you do, everything suddenly becomes easier and much more enjoyable. I have experience teaching students of all ages and needs, and I adapt my lessons to each individual based on their goals. I usually create a shared Drive where the student and I can track our lessons and upload the materials we work on together. I’m really looking forward to teaching you! I have been a language teacher for 10 years. I hold a degree in Political Science and a Master of Fine Arts from New York. As a Spanish graduate, I have a C1 level in both Spanish and Catalan. Additionally, I hold Cambridge Proficiency and TOEFL certifications in English, as well as a DELF B1 certification in French. My classes are designed to be dynamic, personalized, and results-oriented. I provide you with the tools and support you need to progress quickly. Moreover, you won’t just learn the language—you’ll also discover the rich culture that comes with it. Do you want to learn Spanish with a deep understanding and start using it like a native? Don’t hesitate to reach out! Book your first class today and take the first step toward speaking Spanish like a native. I promise that learning will be easier and more enjoyable than you imagine!
